WGA encourages Congress to reform the permitting system for guides and outfitters

In correspondence with the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, the Western Governors’ Association encouraged Congress to reform the complex permitting system for guides and outfitters so that it better supports small businesses in gateway communities. The letter of November 1, 2023, signed by WGA’s Executive Director Jack Waldorf, also highlighted strategies that Congress could endorse to create an environment that is conducive to small business and entrepreneurship in rural areas, including education and training programs that are tailored to the needs of rural communities, resources for entrepreneurs, and tax incentives, grants, or other financial incentives to support businesses locating in these areas. “The iconic public lands in the West support a vibrant outdoor recreation economy,” the letter read. “The permitting process should be streamlined and coordinated across federal land management agencies to provide users a faster and more accessible experience.” Read the full transmittal for additional details.
