In correspondence with the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, Western Governors voiced their support for aspects of the Water Monitoring and Tracking Essential Resources (WATER) Data Improvement Act, and called for federal programs dedicated to improving water data. In the letter of September 3, 2024, signed by Western Governors’ Association Chair, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, and Vice Chair, Utah Governor Spencer Cox, Western Governors wrote, “In the West, reliable and accessible data on water resources is essential to sound water management. Western Governors support federal programs dedicated to improving water data.” Federal programs supported by the Governors include the Federal Priority Streamgage (FPS) Network and the National Groundwater Monitoring Network (NGWMN).
